Queenstown Travel InformationSitting on the shores of the stunning Lake Wakatipu, the town of Queenstown is a gem of New Zealand's South Island. Located in Otago, the town is geared up for tourists because of the skiing which goes on nearby in the winter months. From the pretty Z-shaped lake, visitors can see some of the beautiful nearby mountains, including Cecil Peak, Ben Lomond and Walter Peak. The town is associated with winter sports by New Zealanders and overseas tourists alike, but it would not be correct to say the town has nothing to do in the summer – far from it. Nevertheless, due to the popularity of activities like snow boarding and cross-country skiing, the town's hotels do get that bit busier in the winter.
One of the reasons visitors choose to come in the summer is the region's vineyards which are said to be the most southerly in the world. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes are what the vineyards closest to Queenstown tend to produce and wine tasting experiences are a must for many visitors. Summer also has something to offer visitors looking for a thrill and paragliding and bungee-jumping are two popular summertime activities. Mountain bike hire is also a frequent choice of tourists who can enjoy easy-to-navigate mountain trails and explore some of the superb scenery without needing a car.
In recent years, Queenstown has developed more offerings for tourists seeking a relaxing stay. These days, you are just as likely to find a spa and wellness resort as an adrenaline-fuelled outdoor sports centre. There are also no less than six golf courses that are situated within half an hour's drive from the town centre. The town is also making more of its cultural heritage and visitors can expect to experience regular craft markets where local artisans display and sell their produce.
Although some of the accommodation is Queenstown is geared up for the backpacker's market, luxury hotels and serviced apartments are in plentiful supply, too. Luxury retreats and lodges can be found just out of town and, for visitors looking for a personal touch, there is a wide selection of hosted bed and breakfasts to choose from. All in all Queenstown makes for a superb holiday choice.
